Breaking news experts are seen as leaders in their field.
Not everyone can be a breaking news expert as it takes a lot of experience in your are of expertise and a history of knowledge to be able to discuss unexpected news events or situations with meaningful commentary.
In a breaking news environment, the media is moving fast. Stories are moving fast. The media’s job is to provide essential information about what is happening. We call it a “Level 1” media event where the experts we pitch would be able to discuss the ‘who, what, when, where, why and how’ of the event(s). It’s fact-based situation.
The next level stories to get booked by the media are the secondary stories. However, these take time to be of interest to the media, depending on the scope of the primary event. First, the facts must be well-known and established. It has to make sense to start reporting on the secondary factors that impact society due to the primary event. And this is after the first wave of news cycle reporting is thoroughly covered.
The secondary factors would be topics such as impact on your health, well-being, state of mind, stress levels, anxiety, parenting issues, lifestyle changes, financial impact and so forth.
Prior media experience on the bigger brand media will help you land placements in a breaking news cycle.
This is important. “Experts” should not be new. This should not be their first rodeo. The media will review the potential expert they are considering for commentary, credentials, point of view on the topic and their history of media placements. This history is we call having media assets, as you can leverage an asset to be of more value to you.
Let’s look at credentials. Do you have the education and accomplishments that allow you to responsibly comment? Your education reflects your depth of knowledge and commitment to your expertise. Now let’s look at social relevancy. Is this really important for the audience to hear your commentary at this time? Is it relevant to their experience, again, at this time? The media will move in cycles which is why I say “at this time.” What was in demand yesterday or last week will certainly not be in demand tomorrow. It changes daily.
