Publicity tips, marketing strategies and PR concepts for authors regarding podcasts and radio talk show interviews.
As we talk about all things publicity we always keep in mind this basic concept – your book marketing strategy is likened to a wheel with spokes. We call this the book marketing and promotion wheel and it is like a bicycle wheel and the spokes are your methods of outreach. We have identified at least 12 – 18 methods of outreach that we will share on another podcast for you very soon.
Both podcasts and radio shows can be good for the author.
Here is how I would think about being a guest on a podcast. I would generally want to say yes as all exposure is good for the author or guest and their brand. I believe that the more people who can hear your message the better. The reason for this belief is that you never know where your next client or book sale will come from. My motto is “be everywhere at all times”. Have as much outreach as you can handle. The more publicity you can get, the better.
But let’s say I was very busy and had to make choices. This is how I would think:
I would not immediately say YES. I am established. I already have high-powered big brand names in my media bio along with impressive speaking events and my platform is well-developed. However, I never want to miss a great opportunity and would try to accept all invitations however, if I had to choose, the first thing I would do is check out the reputation of the podcast, its reach in terms of reported listeners and certainly get a full understanding of the topic and subject matter I would be discussing. I would also be very interested in how the podcasting outlet repurposes the podcast. If the podcast was repurposed to other communities of publishers, authors or experts – – that is a target market that is meaningful to me – – – such as being shared in LinkedIn groups that would reach deeper into my audience — I would totally say YES.
Authors should always be thinking of how they can leverage any publicity from radio shows to podcasts and more.
I always advise authors to ask this question and to some this question is going to seem a little odd or at least self-centered. But we have to know the answer to make good choices for ourselves, our time and our money should what we are considering requires a fee. The question is “what is in it for me?” The author should seek out the answer to this question. The podcast owner should know the deliverables of the podcast which is another way of saying what are the benefits to the author? If the answer HAS VALUE to you then the podcast is a go. But an exception is a high-powered podcast that I already know would be great for me I would just book the next available date to be sure I secured the booking. When a good opportunity comes along, don’t wait, or second guess yourself. Just DO IT!
To recap, when deciding on doings podcasts first know how the podcast will add to your overall marketing wheel. Being a guest on a podcast can certainly be a welcome spoke of exposure for you.
Podcast publicity, book marketing publicity strategy should all fit together.
Also, if you are a new author or in the early stages of building your career or your marketing wheel say YES to get the opportunity so you can get more experience and start building up your media bio in a way that is meaningful to you. Building an influential media bio starts with securing some entry level media for yourself and then building from there. Many times podcasts can help you get started in the building process. Also radio interviews accomplish the same thing and faster as well. A beginner can land big brands by working with our PR firm as we specialize in the big brand radio shows booking clients in the top cities on shows that carry a large audience along with an established brand.
Another thing that we touched on before was about being a guest on a podcast if you have to make choices is about the audience – not necessarily how big the audience is – but how targeted the audience is.
When you take our overall book marketing strategy into consideration, that is, of creating a book marketing wheel with each spoke representing a form of outreach you might realize that it’s good to be on both podcasts and radio talk shows as they both help get your message out, create exposure for you and your book and build buzz around your brand.
What are the deliverables of a podcast that reaches your target market with your publicity strategy?
- You already have a targeted market already compiled and selected for you
- Podcasts usually allow you to promote your book and include your contact information however radio talk shows allow you to do this as well.
- If the podcast is posted on their site along with your bio, you would want a link back to your site included.
So the original question was “is it better to be a guest on a podcast or a radio show” so the answer would be “it depends”.
It depends on the podcast, on what the author needs at the moment to build up their brand.
But a better idea is BE ON BOTH! They are different in many ways from one another so it should not be a decision of one over the other.
If I had to choose between an average podcast and a major radio show in a top market I would go with the radio show. I like radio best of all because of its diverse set of deliverables that offer tremendous value to the client.
What’s in it for the author to be on a radio talk show interview for their publicity campaign?
Being a guest on a radio show provides certain important outcomes and deliverables to the authors such as broadening their audience and creating a stronger brand as the shows are an established media brand with a loyal listenership. You are also being associated with major media to build a more influential bio that can be leveraged into more marketing power thereby creating a competitive advantage.
