Boy, Is He In For A Big Surprise

Terrell picks up the phone one more time. He calls another PR firm that came up in his google search hoping to hear something different.

Something other than all he can get for publicity is the big money monthly retainer programs that will take everything he has yet promise him nothing in return. He called at least a dozen publicity firms. All with the same old story.

But Terrell is determined. Terrell has a vision. He wants to help people restore their credit to build better lives. He has extensive insider knowledge and excellent credentials. He can’t let this passion die in his heart.

He just has to get a publicist.

But they all wanted a kazillion dollars.

Terrell calls a few more. The same old story. “$5,000 per month for one year, but they really want $10,000 per month for one year, but for $5,000 per month for one year, they would be willing to do something really simple, like posting on little blogs with no readership but $10,000 a month for one year is really better for him.”

WHAT? Are they crazy, Terrell thought. I’d be broke. They’d have all my money. This would bury me and I would be finished. All in the name of what?

Terrell decides to try one more time. There must be someone out there for me.

Terrell discovers the name “Annie Jennings PR” and heads to the website.

This is different he says. There is something special going on here, I can feel it.

Should he call? Should he risk being disappointed again?

Hey, I called everybody else, what more can she say that I have not heard before?

Terrell is shocked when Annie herself answers the phone. He has a twinge of hope.

He tells Annie his vision. She gets it right away.

But Annie says…. I will not take your money without delivering specific guaranteed outcomes. I can’t take your money for nothing. I do not get paid for services unrendered. I refuse to work that way.

Terrell can’t believe this. Annie is the first publicist who is not talking $10,000 per month retainers with the following disclaimer “we can pitch you but of course, we can’t guarantee you will get anything”.

OMG.

She is promising me access to the really big radio shows in the top cities in the USA. She is promising me TV shows where I have to get booked on the show first or I don’t have to pay her.

Do I dare ask for more? He does.

Can you get me in magazines, newspapers and on the big internet news sites?

She can!

Terrell starts screaming. “I got my PR firm. I got my Publicist. I got MY ANNIE!”

It was then that he noticed a little something in the top left hand corner of her website. It said “Annie Jennings is a National Inspirational Publicist who dedicates her life to helping her clients reach their dreams. “Everyone should have the chance at getting their brass ring,” says Annie who views it as her job to make sure they do!”

Wow, I just found someone whose mission in life is to make sure I get to live my dream or I don’t have to pay her.

Here Is A Square Peg…

And here is a round hole.

Now, spend as much time as you like, but put the square peg into the round hole.

How much time would you spend trying?

None?  (Because you know this is a trick and a time waster, there is no way a square peg goes into a round hole)

About 10 minutes (Well, you try because you think it might be different for you, you might be able to get the square peg into the round hole)

About 1 hour (Well, if you try hard enough, it might work)

The rest of your life (Now we got a problem)….

Annie’s phone rings yesterday

And it’s a hopeful new print on demand author

He has spent thousands of dollars on creating his new print on demand book

He bought all of the bells and whistles

And now, he says “it’s time to sell 10,000 books before the end of the year”.

Square peg, round hole sort of problem?

Yep.

There is a solution though . . .and it’s not paying someone a zillion dollars to get on a plane and head to Hollywood with your book, among hundreds of others, to “get in front of a Hollywood Producer” (now that’s a square peg, round hole dilemma as well)

Just when Annie thought she had heard every question in the book, a newly published print on demand author asks her this question.

Someone wants to introduce him and a slew of other print on demand authors to “certain PR companies” for upfront fee of almost $50. 

The author told Annie that something about this did not sit well with him . . . so he asked Annie if this was a good deal.  

What happens after the introduction? Annie asked. 

I guess if they like you as an author you will be allowed to buy their services, he said.

This reminded Annie of what she calls the bird seed model of marketing. 

Where the people trying to sell you services are like circling crows . . .

And their poor customers are like trays of fresh bird seed set out in a wide open field. 

“Yum, yum, yum,” said the crows. 

“Now that was a tasty snack . . .  how many more you got?”

Well, with over 2.7 million print on demand authors published in 2010 (up from about 22,000 in 2006), the crows could have a very delicious feast. . .

So, let Annie ask the readers a question.

What strikes you odd about asking authors to pay to be introduced to publicity firms?

And then if they like you, you might be allowed to buy their services?
