REAL STORY: Glenda, Is That You? (This One’s A Good Life Changer!)
Glenda, Is That You?
POOR GLENDA: Our phone rings for my 2:00 new client appointment. It’s Glenda.
The first thing I noticed about Glenda (by the way, it is important to note that Glenda is not her real name) is that she has a PhD in Human Resources and is the founder of an Executive Recruitment Firm and helps businesses find the right employees for their firm.
Wow, she sounds fantastic, I thought, perfect for the media as the area of jobs, careers, layoffs, downsizing, unemployment and “anything human resource” related is one of the hottest topics of national conversation and making headlines every day. I quickly saw her as a national voice and expert contributor on the issues facing our country. I noted to myself that Glenda has big time credentials, a PhD, that would give her a tremendous competitive edge both in the media and especially in her industry. We were good to go!
BUT NO: She told me she was broke and could not pay her mortgage due in just a few days. She was wondering why she had no clients, no business and no prospects.
WOW, WHAT WENT WRONG? Well the first thing is that she did not embrace the changes in market demand for her core services, in that businesses are on hold and they are not hiring. She did not hear her marketing talking to her, telling her to create a newer model that addresses the concerns and demands of the current marketplace.
Listen to your market place as they will tell you by their actions what they want.
A VISION FOR GLENDA: Given her PhD in Human Resources she should have created additional services that would help companies manage the complex issues surrounding layoffs from deciding which employees to let go, to how to let them go while avoiding collateral damage to their workplace.
She could advise businesses on how to help the “non-fired” employees understand and accept the layoffs to create a thriving workplace culture in spite of the recessionary and difficult environment. She could provide employee workshops on how to deal with uncertainty in your workplace and focus more on doing a terrific job each day rather than thinking “am I the next one to be fired?” or “will I still have a job at the end of the day”?
She could pack her business by educating companies about the devastating effects survivor syndrome can have on their business and that they could hire her to help prevent this.
Would companies have paid for this? Of course, businesses are not broke, just cutting back to keep in line with the change in demand.
Who wants to throw money away by keeping employees you do not need on the payroll? No one.
WHO WANTS TO HIRE GLENDA? But who wants to invest in their downsizing process and hire Glenda to help them create their layoff plan so it is responsible and respectful for everyone? Who wants to invest in their workforce so they can make it over the hurdles and wind up stronger, more powerful , ready and able to do their jobs to their ultimate potential?
Everyone!
Should Glenda have been out of work?
NO
Should Glenda have listened to her market and responded with new services?
OF COURSE
As the story unfolds, I find that she has more problems than just no business . . . she has no spirit left. She is admitting defeat and her last ditch effort was calling me.
I HAD MORE IDEAS FOR HER TOO: Why not hold workshops for job candidates and teach interview skills and provide coaching services? I instantly saw so much opportunity that it took my breath away.
You have to be in it to win it. We never know where our next big opportunity will come from, so the idea is to be everywhere at all times and let the referrals and new clients roll in.
LET’S DO THIS THING: Now, where to begin. I asked her what she had in the house, that is, what are the assets she currently has that she can use to get moving fast (and with no money).
You don’t need money to have momentum, drive and desire.
Glenda said “nothing”.
I said are you on FACEBOOK?
“I hate Facebook,” she said.
Are you on TWITTER? I asked.
“I hate Twitter,” she said.
Can you go to the networking events in your city?
“I go to them all and get nothing.”
Wow, I said to myself, I have a big challenge on my hands. I have a magnificently talented expert in a heavy duty, in demand area of expertise with top notch credentials who seems to hate everything and quite possibly, everyone.
So, all that was left for me to do was to suggest the most powerful marketing strategy on earth that is totally free and works FAST to stimulate action, energy and momentum. It’s called Tithe Marketing* and we have a free MP3 audio of the concept on our site. But this article is not about Tithe Marketing but the reason I mention Tithe Marketing is that it’s part of this story. Glenda needed a new philosophy, a new point of view and a renewal of her spirit. The invincible Tithe Marketing strategy has nothing to do with money, but everything to do with creating over the top energy, drive and momentum so you can achieve the life of your dreams.
THE MISTAKE: Glenda was unable to respond to the changing market demand, unable to expand her area of expertise to meet the new market demand, engaged in self-pity “why me” attitude until she became so miserable and so negative that it is just about to destroy her life.
The same thinking that got you into the mess, cannot be used to get you out of the mess (I love Albert Einstein whose paraphrased quote seems appropriate right now).
From here, she can only go from bad to worse as she has to lose everything to discover herself, her power and her potential. She has to get rid of her entitlement mentality and start over with enthusiasm.
In closing, the first question to ask yourself to bring about massive change and all new levels of success in your life is:
“Am I A Glenda?”
