With Over One Million Books Published In 2009, Authors Are Asking How To Sell Books And How To Market A Book In A Competitive Marketplace.

Annie Jennings of the national PR firm, Annie Jennings PR, knows 18 ways to sell your book with one of them being getting booked as the guest on a radio show.  The bigger the market, the better in terms of the numbers of people you will be reaching, the better your book marketing and book promotion results.

Getting booked on the radio shows is the first step, but after you are booked, your job is to be a great guest.  You’ll need to know the tips of the trade, that is the media training tips and media training guidelines to optimize your book marketing and book promotion during the show.

BOOK MARKETING:  Get booked on radio campaigns and as a guest on TV shows.  Getting on radio or television or in print or a great internet placement is the work of book publicity.

BOOK MARKETING:   If you are a self published author, you may have different challenges than a traditionally published author in that there are no “in house” advertising or publicity departments to assist you in the initial selling and promoting of your book.  Have no fear.  Book marketing secrets are available at the Annie Jennings PR site where you can learn all you need to know.

Annie Jennings PR presents outstanding book marketing and book publicity resources.  Discover the essential media training skills you need to be a great guest on the radio.

BOOK MARKETING – NO CELL PHONE OR HEADSET FOR A RADIO INTERVIEW:

Keep in mind, never do a show using a cell phone, headset, or speakerphone, they are all unreliable!  Always turn off your call waiting.  Contact your local phone company for instructions on how to do this for an individual call.  You can turn it back on again immediately after your interview.

BOOK MARKETING TIP – HOTLINE NUMBER:

Always have a hotline number for the studio before your interview, if the producer does not call use the hotline number to call them.

BOOK MARKETING TIP – KEEP YOUR NOTES READY:

Make sure to have notes in front of you in a way that your facts, prepared segue phrases, and other talking points are easily accessible when needed.  And you may need them quickly!

BOOK MARKETING TIP – KNOW THE TOPICS IN YOUR BOOK:

Have your book handy with key pages marked with post it notes that identify the content so you can quickly flip to a page if necessary for reference.  Be sure to know what’s in your book as the producer and host may use it to guide the interview.

BOOK MARKETING TIP – KEEP THE INTERVIEW LOCATION QUITE:

A quiet environment is a must have for your radio interview.  Authors should have their cell phone on mute (it is usually given for back up purposes so keep it one until the interview).  Set up the scene so you are not distracted (kids, pets, loud alerts on your computer, etc.).  Be sure to get the kids set up in advance etc. so their needs are taken care of before the interview because as you know, as soon as you get on the radio interview, your kids will suddenly need a snack.

BOOK MARKETING TIP – STAND BY FOR THE SHOW TO CALL YOU:

Be at your interview line well before the scheduled time, they may call to check in.

BOOK MARKETING – KEEP LOTS OF WATER AVAILABLE:

Have water ready, but not in a spill-able place that could soak your notes. Also be sure your phone has a mute button and use it if you have to cough or sneeze or take a huge gulp of water (the audience can hear you swallow and gulp).  Don’t forget to unmute yourself when you are done!

BOOK MARKETING – THE RADIO SHOW USUALLY CALLS EARLY:

Usually a producer will call the guest a few minutes before they are scheduled (however, this is not always the case) – listen to the show for those few minutes on hold and be ready to jump right in if the host puts you on air without anyone coming back on the line first.

BOOK MARKETING – GREAT MUST KNOW TIP OLLOW THE HOST’S LEAD:

If he/she goes right into a question be prepared with an immediate answer – don’t say “hi, how are you doing”.  Shows get right into it – Signal your audience that this is one interview they will not want to miss!

BOOK MARKETING – HIGH ENERGY IS KEY:

It is important to optimize your book marketing and book promotion opportunity on the air so keep your energy levels high.  Be strong and confident in your voice, don’t sound tired.  Avoid appearing meek, mild an un-opinionated as these are the signs of a bad guests. Great guests are high energy, opinionated and media trained!

BOOK MARKETING – AUTHOR SHOULD KNOW CURRENT EVENTS:

Your radio host can ask you anything so be ready.  Authors should always be ready to discuss the issues presented in their book however, authors must be prepared for current event commentary and have  phrases at hand to lead the conversation back to your message.

Book authors and experts should always be ready to do a great job for the show.  This is important because keep in mind that ratings support the station and interviews drive ratings and if the ratings are good the stations does great.

The radio stations want great guests, timely topics, engaging talented guests who can TALK about the issues important to the listening audience.

NO PROBLEM!

Annie Jennings PR understands the strategy to deliver the desired outcome for the station and the listeners.  The Annie Jennings Media Training team teaches authors and experts how to not only share your passion, message and experience with your listeners but to also promote yourself, your website and your book to the listeners.

So, enjoy the book promotion process and get ready for a fun time.  Getting booked on radio shows, on TV and in other media allows you to experience your mission in motion.  So get out there into world via radio, reaching millions, changing lives and empowering others.

MEDIA TRAINING FOR BOOK PROMOTION – KNOW THE CURRENT EVENTS IN THE NEWS AND YOUR INDUSTRY:

In some cases you will find that the host will want to ask you questions where they have a personal interest and they may not be what you expert.  But remember, you are most likely LIVE and on the air, as with radio and TV, so you are pressed to answer.  In addition to being ready to talk about the message and theme of your book, you must be prepared for current event commentary and have your segue phrases at hand to lead the host back to your message.  I would also recommend to be prepared with an answer to give, while you are thinking of the real answer such as “you know, that’s a great question, I have never really thought about that issue in that way”.

MEDIA TRAINING FOR BOOK PROMOTION – FOLLOW THE NEWS WEBSITES:  Be sure to review the major internet news sites such as CNN.com, MSNBC.com, MSN.com and any other news site before any intervew you do with the media for breaking news you should know about given your credentials and topic.  You don’t want to be surprised with a breaking news tie-in that you did not hear about.  Whenever, you speak to the media you should be ready and prepared.

MEDIA TRAINING – EXPECT DEBATE:

Debate, conversation drives listeners to the edge of their seat.  No need to get angry, hostile or take debate personally.   Be polite (after all radio is also entertainment), but make your intelligent points.  Have any expected controversial commentary from either the host or a caller pre-written on index cards.  No need to get flustered. You are prepared and professional.  Just make your intelligent points and you will be fine.  You can also add buffer comments as “although you make an important point and I value your opinion, I strongly feel . . . . (And go into your comments).  Remember, GRACE under pressure.

MEDIA TRAINING – DON’T DO THIS:  Never say “I have no idea” as an answer or “I just read it somewhere” when asked for the source of a statistic.

MEDIA TRAINING – SOURCE FOR STATS AVAILABLE:   Always have the sources of any facts and statistics at your fingertips.  Never make a representation where you do not have the source available.

MEDIA TRAINING – KNOW WHY YOU WROTE YOUR BOOK:  Be sure to have a great answer to this sure to be asked question “why did you write your book?”    Here is a sample of what you might prepare for yourself:   As a professional family therapist who has counseled teens for over 10 years, I have come to realize that a simple set of rules for teens should available in a quicka and easy to read format to help teens make great choices for their lives.  With this in mind and as my motivation, I created  the most powerful “must know” teen tips in my new book “TEENS RULE (AND WHY WE NEED TO KNOW THAT)” that shares the guidelines of being a successful, happy productive and amazing teen.”
