Book authors and experts should be aware of media etiquette when communicating with their media contacts.  The first thing is to be aware that the media is juggling lots of different tasks beginning with their assignments for the day.  Although they would love to give everyone the attention they deserve sometimes they just cannot do that.  So it is important to approach the media with respect for their time.

Next, the media wants to know about highly qualified and experienced experts that fit into their topic area so by all means, let the media know about you if you are an author or source that could work for them.  First, do your research.  Know who you are contacting in terms of their area of expertise, what types of stories they write, the sources they like to use etc.  Introduce yourself to your media contact via email and include all of the information they are likely to need including a short professional bio that includes your credentials, expertise, immediate contact info and your website. 

Be sure to have a media website that showcases YOU as an author, professional and authority on your topic areas.  If you are not able to dedicate an entire site to showcasing yourself for the media to use be sure to create a “media room” on your professional business site (rather than you heavy duty sales site).  

Stay in touch with your contacts.  It’s ok to email the media about monthly to remind them of YOU!  It is NOT ok to wear out your welcome with too much too fast.  It takes time to build your relationship with the media and over time, you can do this.
